Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT) Risk Assessment

A deep vein thrombosis (DVT) is a blood clot that generally forms in veins of the legs. If the blood clot breaks free and travels to the lungs, it can block an artery and cause a potentially deadly pulmonary embolism (PE). Long periods of immobility resulting from being bedridden or sitting during extended periods of travel increase the risk for developing a DVT. People recovering from certain surgeries are also at increased risk for a DVT.
