Psychosocial rehabilitation services are primarily delivered in a group setting. These services develop, support and optimize the quality of life and functional abilities of people with serious and persistent mental illnesses. Such programs have a commitment to community integration.
Therapeutic Goals
- Improve or sustain the member's level of functioning
- Increase the member's ability to cope with his or her psychiatric disability
- Reduce the need for hospitalization
Service Components
Psychosocial rehabilitation service provides structured and purposeful activities where individuals can engage in a group/community type setting with peers and staff in a way that facilitates community integration. Services may include:
- Peer and family support services
- Structured purposeful activities; groups for budgeting, skill training or ADL training to support independent living
- Socialization and use of leisure time services
- Vocational and pre-vocational rehabilitation services
- Crisis intervention services
Admission Criteria -- Must Meet First Two
- Have a serious mental illness with a DSM-IV Axis I diagnosis
- Have documented functional deficits in:
- Self-maintenance
- Occupation or employment
- Social roles
- Living independently
- Has an expressed desire to learn social skills or enhance the quality of relationships
- Has an expressed desire to learn pre-vocational skills
Exclusion Criteria -- Any Are Sufficient
- A primary diagnosis of mental retardation or substance abuse
- A medical condition that would complicate the treatment and cannot be managed by the psychosocial rehabilitation center
- Member currently meets criteria for a different LOC
Continued Services Criteria -- Must Meet All
- Member is making progress toward treatment goals and benefiting from program
- Member's motivation for treatment is evident, based on participation and follow-through with recommendations such as regular attendance or completion of tasks -- or -- member's current symptoms continue to impair ability to perform activities of daily living or impair social, occupational or interpersonal functioning -- or -- member has a documented history of a drop in functional ability without support at this level
Discharge Criteria -- Any Are Sufficient
- Member has achieved the long-range treatment goals necessary to be discharged
- Member's level of functioning has improved to having sufficient natural supports, employment in the community
- Member demonstrates lack of motivation by non-attendance or non-participation
- Member's clinical condition requires a different LOC
