The Level of Care (LOC) is used by various specialties to designate the intensity of professional care clients require for their needs. There are six LOC in the Levels of Care Utilization System (LOCUS).
The intensity of case management needed is predicted and provided using LOC 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6. LOC 1 is a wellness and maintenance category. LOC 6 is the most intense ongoing need of service. A peron at this level usually requires in-patient services. Most people served by community services are LOC 3 and 4.
The goal of treatment planning is to define the goals and objectives of comprehensive treatment for the individual and address the means of meeting them.
The amount of client contact you can expect the case manager to have with your patient:

LOC 4
- A minimum of three contacts per week with two of these contacts face-to-face
- An intense amount of contact for an outpatient setting

LOC 3
- A minimum of a contact every two weeks and two face-to-face contacts per month
For LOC 3 and above, the client is usually accompanied to physician appointments.
Limitations:
- LOC does not address emergent needs
- LOC is not a replacement for monitoring of symptoms and clinical indicators
